Mindfulness Meditation Teacher
Earth & Environmental Scientist
I am a mindfulness meditation teacher and hold with deep understanding societal, collective, and personal pain. I learned mindfulness tools and began to practice meditation on my own and then with a Buddhist community over a decade ago because I felt unease and in need of balance. When I began to turn inward to my experience (thoughts, feelings, body pain, perception of self and others), I was confronted with fear. As I practiced, there was unbearable loneliness then avoidance. This experience is quite common in people that begin to meditate on a daily basis, especially if there is trauma in their past. Having a teacher to share with and guide you through uncomfortable sensations that arise is essential for effective and deeper practice.
I have personal experience working with trauma symptoms and addiction (substances and processes) and have worked with psychotherapists and meditation teachers within groups to develop awareness and balance. My experience informs my ability to teach students that are experiencing symptoms of trauma that show up as hyper or hypo aroused. I also incorporate nature (such as observational journaling) and creativity into practice.
I am also a scientist and have extensive teaching experience working with urban high school and college students. My goals in teaching environment-based science courses were aimed at bridging the connection between students and the natural world. I am currently training to teach community resilience tools to those impacted by climate change and are experiencing emotional difficulty. Connection to community is an essential resource for everyone, creating a strong sense of well-being.
What are my areas of specialization?
Common experiences: feeling lost, isolation, anxiety, depression, addiction, post-traumatic stress
Societal roles: helping and academic fields
Age groups: teenage (15-17) and adults
What can you expect while working with me?
I will be a teacher and a support for you to safely explore your experience in a confidential space. I take a non-judgmental stance and am curious about you. I ask questions to inform ways I can best help and teach you tools for stability and transformation.
What are my teaching credentials and areas of training?
I completed 100-hour meditation teacher training and certification through Dharma Moon and Tibet House NYC. This certification allows me to confidently teach open awareness mindfulness meditation to individuals, groups and supplement with teachings from the Tibetan Buddhist lineages.
I completed additional trainings in trauma sensitive mindfulness (TSM) through Trauma-Informed Education and David Treleaven. These trainings allow me to adapt teachings, recognize, and help students that are experiencing nervous system dysregulation by giving instruction that widens their window of tolerance.
How do I continue to develop as a teacher?
I am supervised by an experienced mindfulness teacher through the The Mindfulness Network. Supervision is essential for keeping a safe space for the teacher and student. If you are interested in what mindfulness-based supervision looks like you can read here.
I am training with The Center for Healthy Minds and The Loka Initiative leading to certification in bringing faith-led environmental and climate efforts to my offerings.
I am training to become a Dharma Teacher with The Dharma Teacher Order to learn teachings from original Buddhist sutra translations by various teachers from different Buddhist lineages. This extensive training is further developing my meditation and spiritual practice and allows for inner and sangha connection in silent retreat.
I attend an in-person Buddhist group at a temple to be with sangha (community of practitioners).
